The weather is about to take a turn for the worst just in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.

After the warmest start to May on record, the Met Office has warned that we can expect wet and rainy weather and even potentially thunderstorms this weekend.

It is not good for sunshine lovers who have been enjoying basking in temperatures of 28°C this month.

This morning across London and the south, people woke up to heavy rain and downpours.

The wet weather is also expected to continue into next week, just in time for the May half term holiday.

David Oliver from the Met Office explained that the high pressure will move away eastwards this weekend.

He said: ‘These will bring rain and windier conditions from the west later Friday, which will spread across the whole of the UK on Saturday. Some heavy rain is expected, especially in the northwest later on Saturday when winds will also strengthen, bringing a risk of coastal gales in the north.

‘These strong winds will continue on Sunday as an area of low pressure passes the northwest of the UK.

‘Blustery showers are expected on Sunday, which will be heaviest and most frequent in the northwest.’

He also said windy conditions are expected across Scotland but there is still uncertainty about the track this low will take.

Temperatures will be broadly average for the time of year, around 18°C to 20°C across the country.

The unsettled weather continues into bank holiday Monday, and showers could be heavy and thundery in places, especially across the north west.

It’s not good news for children and parents next week who may be off work and school.

Further frontal systems are set to move into the country during half term, bringing more wet weather.

Temperatures next week will feel cool at times, especially when there are strong winds.
