Urgent recall of lasagne over fears it contains wrong type of meat

A popular lasagne – the Italian dish famously made from beef – has been recalled for being made of lobster.

La Famiglia Rana Slow-Cooked Braised Beef Lasagne – sold in supermarkets like Tesco and Morrisons – has been recalled.

A ‘packing error’ means the ready-made meal, which says ‘slow-cooked braised beef’ in large letters on the label, ‘may contain prawn and lobster’.

Some packs have the brand’s Prawn and Lobster Lasagne inside instead, La Famiglia Rana said.

The Food Standards Agency said: ‘This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to crustaceans.’

The affected product is in the pack size of 700g. Shoppers should look for batch code L0B510816, with a use-by date of June 17, 2025.

The product recall notice added: ‘Consumers who have purchased the product should not eat it, and can return it to the store from which you purchased it for a refund, even without presenting the purchase receipt.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience caused.’

Up to 3% of adults in the UK have a shellfish allergy, around 1.5million people.

Crustacean allergy symptoms can be especially severe, including hives, itchy skin, swollen face, breathing troubles, wheezing and diarrhoea.

The most life-threatening complication is anaphylactic shock, a potentially deadly allergic reaction.

La Famiglia Rana, founded in 1962, specialises in Italian cuisine, like pasta.

A food recall is issued when a product is considered unsafe, so it is removed from shelves and shoppers are urged to return or dispose of it.

A popular pasta sauce by Organico Realfoods was recalled earlier this month over fears it contains shards of glass.

Only a week before, Morrisons recalled its own-brand Cumberland sausages for containing ‘small pieces of blue plastic’.
