Rapists and paedophiles face chemical castration under plans to try and stop reoffending.

Prisoners in England and Wales could be given drugs which can dull sexual urges and is expected to cut offending by two thirds.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she is planning on rolling out the drugs across 20 prisons in Britain, and plans on expanding it across the country.

‘For too long, we have turned a blind eye to the threat sex offenders pose, considering the solutions too difficult or unpalatable,’ a Government source told The Sun.

‘Shabana isn’t squeamish about doing what it takes to protect the public.

What is chemical castration?

Chemical castration reduces libido and sexual activity through the use of anaphrodisiac drugs.

Castration involves taking two drugs, with one limiting sexual thoughts and the other reducing testosterone.

The drugs reduce sex drive and diminishes the person’s capacity for sexual arousal.

It is reversible once the person stops taking the drugs.

Side effects include depression, hot flashes, anemia, increase in body fat and higher risks of cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis.

Plans for a small voluntary pilot has already been reportedly rejected for not being tough enough.

Independent reviewer David Gauke told Sky News: ‘One of our recommendations is that we think that we should continue to explore this, this is drugs that reduces sexual desire.

‘It’s not appropriate for every sexual offender, and the evidence base for this does need to be built up.

‘I’m not going to claim it’s the answer for everything. This is about reducing the risk of reoffending in future.

‘There are some sex offenders who want to reduce their desires. And if we can explore this, I think that is something that’s worthwhile.’

Which countries chemically castrate sexual offenders?

Chemical castration is voluntary in some US states, Germany, France, Sweden and Denmark.
